Life on the road isn’t always sunsets and serenity. Sometimes, it’s your truck overheating halfway up a mountain with no place to turn around. Sometimes, it’s your dog leaping out of a camper window. And sometimes, it’s sharing a magical Fourth of July with your family, under a light drizzle, while fireworks explode across a lake below you.
In this week’s Kerouac’s Cruising episode, we recount a journey full of beautiful chaos and unexpected magic.
🛻 A Wild Ride to Idaho
Our journey from Blackfoot to Quartz Flats was anything but smooth. After skipping a sketchy ghost town, we hit Quartz Flats Campground ($7.50/night with our pass). Then, a mountain road tested our truck’s limits—overheating transmission, cliffside scares, and a three-hour trailer turnaround!
🐾 Norman the Escape Artist
Even our pup got caught up in the unpredictability. Norman, typically calm and loyal, somehow opened a window and escaped while we were out. He was safely waiting when we returned—but it reminded us that even dogs have instincts we can’t always understand.
🎉 Family, Fireworks & Flow
Despite the hiccups, we celebrated our grandson’s first birthday surrounded by family, food, and plenty of lake time. From skeet shooting on a mountaintop to bruised ribs from tubing wipeouts, we packed in plenty of summer fun. Our Fourth of July ended with steaks, can jam, and a private firework show over the lake—a memory etched in rain-soaked joy.
💡 What This Journey Taught Us
Trust your instincts.
Don’t underestimate terrain—or the limits of your vehicle.
Joy lives in the in-between moments: a shared laugh, a floating baby, a missed turn that leads somewhere better.
We're parked now, just six miles from family, with trees, deer, and stillness to welcome us back to ourselves.
Tune in to the episode to hear the full story, lessons learned, and the beauty that unfolded in between the messes.
